Governor signs bill giving San Diego County more flexibility in Health and Human Services

Gov. Jerry Brown Thursday signed AB 2568, a bill authored by Assembly Speaker Emeritus Toni G. Atkins that authorizes the County of San Diego to be designated as an integrated Health and Human Services Agency.

San Diego County has been running an integrated agency overseeing all health and human-services departments since 1998. It has worked well for county residents who require services such as those dealing with aging and independence, behavioral-health, child-welfare, public-health and self-sufficiency programs.

Toni Atkins Wins Majority of Votes in State Senate Race

Assemblywoman Toni Atkins‘s big vote margin on Tuesday sets her up to serve next the state Senate.

With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Atkins, a Democrat, was receiving 66 percent of the vote in the 39th Senate District. Republican John Renison trailed her with just 18 percent of the vote. They’ll head to a runoff in November.

Atkins said she plans to focus on making housing more affordable if she joins the state Senate.

$16.2 million given locally for veteran housing

Three area housing developments have received $16.2 million in state funds to provide new housing for homeless military veterans and their families.

An announcement from Assemblywoman Toni Atkins, D-San Diego, says that $6.37 million was awarded through the Veterans Housing and Homeless Prevention program to the Grantville Veterans Housing project, $3.34 million went to the Vista del Puente in Southcrest in San Diego, and Veterans Village San Diego’s project in Escondido received $6.5 million.

Governor Signs Toni Atkins’ Bill on Ivory Poaching

Gov. Jerry Brown on Sunday signed legislation authored by Assembly Speaker Toni G. Atkins that strengthens California’s fight against the illegal slaughter of elephants and rhinos.

AB 96 closes loopholes that prevent fully effective enforcement of existing California law prohibiting the sale of ivory. The Golden State is one of the top markets in the world for illegal ivory.

“The governor’s signature on AB 96 strengthens enforcement against the illegal ivory trade in California, which will, in turn, help put an end to poaching.” said Atkins, who represents coastal San Diego County.
